Why Do Some People Get Too Carried Away By Black?
Black and white are the two extremes. Black is the complete lack of light and white is the fullness of light. Black represents emptiness and white, fullness. The mystique attached to black is undeniable and it’s understandable that it is the color of choice for many. Some just go too far.
The group that uses black to best effect is probably bikers. The biker chooses black because he wants to look intimidating. He wears black leather, from his boots to his leather pants and all the way up to the black helmet he puts on before he gets on his gleaming black motorbike with its shiny chrome detailing.
It is a popular ‘color’ choice among fashion designers, as well. They choose it because it makes a bold and contradictory statement. Bold, because of all of the connotations the color carries with it. Creativity is not one of them, but they use it creatively. They also wear it tastefully, right down to their expensive black sport watch, displayed so prominently on their wrist. In the case of fashion designers, black equals class.
Both of the above examples show the use of black to good effect. It has its intended psychological effect. When ebony is overdone, however, it can get a little ridiculous. Take the example of goths. From their clothes to their lipstick and even their black baby furniture (really!), they just plain overdo it. The difference is in degree. Goths just get too carried away and they just make you shake your head and smile.
Black is symbolic of everything dark, mysterious and deadly. It is connected with words like shadowy, somber and funereal. It is the color of pessimism, while white is associated with optimism. It is hard to understand why anyone would want to make their entire life reflect the dark side.
Between black and white is the entire world of brilliant color. Color is produced when light is refracted. Pure white light is thus symbolic of life itself and the colors produced from light with everything that moves.
That said, it is equally true that as many people get carried away with white as they do by black. Those who prefer white are often reaching for a level of purity that is beyond this world. But isn’t the avoidance of color a denial of life, whether you choose a pure white or a completely black lifestyle? Life is all about color, including but not limited to black and white. Why not celebrate life by embracing all its colors?
