Skateboarding is a lot of fun. If you’ve been paying attention you’ve no doubt noticed that skateboarding has gone from an odd past time for teenagers to a fully recognized sport for grown adults! You can be a professional, earning a great living at it like Tony Hawk. The good news is that anybody can learn to skateboard. The bad news is that it can take quite a while before you are skateboarding at the same level as the pros. Make no mistake, being a pro takes a lot of work and dedication. But there’s nothing stopping you, so here are some pointers to get you going.
Wearing the proper footware is important. Skateboarding uses specific muscles in your feet, and you need to be able to move your feet in certain ways to control your board properly. No question, you can wear any kind of shoes you want. But if you want to do more than skate in a straight line, then it’s best to get the right foot gear. Athletic shoes for skateboarding are like any other except the shoe is flat inside. They’re made, purposely, with no or little arch support. You’ll have more board control because your feet will be able to control better. Most sporting goods stores sell skateboarding shoes, and they’re not very pricey.
It’s probably best to find a well-built board that’s not priced too high. High quality, beautiful skateboards can be outrageously expensive. They cost so much you might be afraid to get them dirty or scuffed. That’s the purpose of a beginner’s skateboard. They’re usually thicker and have stronger wheels. They’ll take the abuse, and since they’re cheaper it won’t really matter. A board that’s made more for new skaters is the ABEC skateboard.
You’ll need to learn the skaters lingo, and it’s good to find out the different kinds of skateboards used. Lots of different boards available, and they’re not all the same, either. Learn what the differences are and the reasons for them. Be sure you understand what other skaters mean when they talk about skating. That way you can get help about something if you ever need it.
There’s a heck of a lot more to skating than standing on a flat board for a little bit. Believe it or not, skateboards are a legitimate way to travel and they provide you with hours of entertainment. Have an open mind to learning, and that will be the trick that will make you better.
